Gratefully I never got into the watch-collecting thing. I visited a shop with a friend who WAS hooked on it, and nearly bit on a Chas. Frodsham (hope I spelled that right) pocket watch, but sucessfully resisted.
When I turned 50, however, I did buy two Rolex Presidents, one for myself an one for my wife, since our anniversary was also imminant.
Since I'm an engineer and not a lawyer or physician, this was one of my larger extravagances, but I've never regretted doing it.
I even went for a bit beyond the standard mid-life indulgence and picked one for myself with a bark design bracelet and a walnut face. (I felt I had neither the funds nor the ethnicity to justify the optional diamond bezel or bracelet).
However, it's been on my wrist ever since then, except for cleanings, and not sitting in a drawer.
