I would guess it's the same reason we spend our hard-earned money on superb
mechanical watches when we can only wear one at a time. The rest of the
time they sit in their original boxes, with original documents, except when
we wear one to make sure it doesn't dry up.
I can't afford enough winders to keep them all running so I sort of work
through them, wearing one (carefully) for a couple of days, then put it
back in a safe place.
