Gitzo was bought several years ago by Manfrotto.  Production was mostly 
moved from the very antiquated factory outside Paris to Manfrotto's 
factories in Italy.  Some of the French machinery was in really bad 
shape and was scrapped.  I'm guessing that Manfrotto saw no need to 
continue making some Gitzo products which were slow sellers and direct 
competition for their own line.  Anyone who really needs a geared 
center column can buy Manfrotto or Vinten.
