It gets burned. The last sequence if of the giant
warehouse filled with his stuff. The camera truck toward an
incenerator. A voice is heard saying "what do we do with
this stuff?" another voice: "Junk! Burn it!" and we see
Rosebud thrown into the incenerator. We watch as the painted
trademark "Rosebud" bubbles and is effaced. The very last
shot is a slow pan up the gates (a matt painting) with the
circle-K monogram on it and a question mark shaped pillar of
smoke behind it.
Or at least as close as I can get by memory. I have no
idea of how many times I've seen it. Maybe a hundred. There
is no doubt in my mind that Orson was responsible for most
of what was in it, but he was excedingly lucky to have some
of the very best support people in Hollywood and a
superlative writer to work with. He was also excedingly
lucky to have gotten a contract with a studio where no one
was minding the store. He would never have gotten away with
it at any other major studio. RKO was a phenomonon and needs
to have a good book written about it.
