Edmund Optics is selling 2X2 quarter wave plates at $11.00.
If you have a cheap linear polarizer and the tools to open it you can slip
one of these in, set to 45 degrees from the plane of polarization and end
up with a circular polarizer. Not sure but it might require some optical
cement to really make it fool-proof.
Things like this can be done because I have done it. I made some glass
filters by sandwiching Kodak gels between two thin sheets of glass I got
from the Old Edmund. I did have a little advantage because I had easy
access to a vacuum system and could take all the air out before doing the
assembly.
