This is the mirror for the eye-level reflex viewer!  Raise the pop-up 
magnifier, push the center of the hood in until it catches, then look 
through the 'small magnifier' and you should see a partial image of the 
exposure, reversed both vertically and horizontally.  Frankly,I've never 
thought it was very useful.
