I will have to check, but maybe all the 2.8 cameras (from 2.8 B onwards) had
the selftimer inside the shutter - because the shutter was large enough to
accommodate it. Not certain about this, but definitely the F and E3 cameras,
both 3.5 and 2.8 had the self timer inside the shutter.

Ah, That's why one has to press the shutter release button to start the 
selftimer. I have never looked inside my F and E3 cameras. But it wouldn't 
be impossible to go back to the old system, would it?

We learn something every day here. :-)
