It certainly is good advice to not replace them blindly with NiMH cells, but
I don't know that the charger will "destroy" them.  Why do you say that?  In
fact, it may work perfectly well...but without having a schematic for the
charger, I can't tell.  I have designed a number of battery charging
systems, and they accommodated both NiCad and NiMH, with no changes in
circuitry.  It's lithium batteries that were the REALLY fussy ones to make a
charger for...
