Re: [Rollei] shoot me down

Dave,

I have both a Rollei 35 (which I bought in December) and a Ricoh GR1
(which I have had for a couple of years) and the Ricoh is currently for
sale. Why? I prefer the Rollei for several reasons, some of which may
not be wholly rational:

- - I like purely mechanical cameras (my main camera is a Leica M)
- - I find the Rollei's 40mm lens a more useful focal length for general
snapshooting than the Ricoh's 28mm
- - The Rollei gives me full manual operation, the Ricoh at most
aperture-prority (albeit with exposure compensation possible)
- - The Rollei has a much shorter shutter lag, the Ricoh, like all other
autofocus cameras, has a noticeable delay between pressing the button
and taking the picture.

The last two issues are the main reasons why I prefer the Rollei--they
may or may not be important to you.

In all fairness, the Ricoh also has some advantages:
- - much easier film loading
- - it winds all the film out of the casette upon loading, and then winds
it back in frame by frame as you shoot; this means that if you
accidentally open the camera, you will not lose any exposed frames
- - the Ricoh is smaller and lighter than the Rollei

Both cameras have excellent lenses, capable of outstanding images.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me off-list.
