1/500th uses a second booster spring which is partially compressed when the
speed dial is moved to that speed. That is what the resistance to movement
is at the end of the speed settings. 
  The main spring will not be weakened by being under tension, although
popular wisdom says otherwise. 
  Its also possible that film flatness may be better right after winding
due to some exta tension on the film. This may also be nonsense. Does
anyone have a laser interferometer???
