length given was obviously wrong, either because no such lens existed,
because the perspective was wrong, or for other reasons. Like a photo
showing "donuts" from a mirror lens and identified by the photographer as
from a 55mm Micro-Nikkor!!!! I take all info supplied by photographers
about photos with several grains of salt.
I'm a Canon guy myself, but I seem to remember a Nikon macro lens that had
an inbuilt ringlight - labelled as a 'dentistry' lens from memory. I have no
idea what the focal length was, and care even less, but I often wondered
about its usefulness with subjects full of highlights - it would surely
produce donuts. This is why I never used a ringlight for any of my macro
work. Insect eyes suddenly appear as though they are wearing spectacles.
I am damned sure that you judged the photos you received correctly - it just
twigged an interesting memory!
Cheers,
Roy.
