  Oooops. I didn't read your post carefully enough. If you threded between
the rollers the film it should work. Proably it needs cleaning and an
adjustment. 
  To check the wind a roll of film in the take up compartment, or an empty
spool with enough tape wound up on one end to operate the metering roller
and put a doubled up business card between the  feeler rollers. Close the
back and see if it winds properly. In fact, it should wind even with the
back open. The doubled card is thicker than film and should trip the
mechanism. In any case there is probably not anything actually broken
likely just gummed up from old lubricant.
