Rich and all:
The sensor is removed from the flash unit and installed on the sensor
mounting at the end of the cord which then fits into the camera hot shoe,
just as you suggest. At the other end of the cord is a small plug which is
placed into the flash unit in place of the now removed sensor.
Thanks for the suggestion to use an old Rolleiflash as a shoe mounting.
I'll keep my eyes on ebay and on the local camera shows.
